Welcome to Paul’s blog! News, photography themes and projects.

The basic idea why I looked around for a new camera was very simple: to unload all the heavy gear and go lighter! The Micro Four Thirds are more compact and lighter as any DSLR. Finally, the Olympus OM-D E-M10 made the race and is now my newest addition in the photo family.

This camera is very well built and almost as comfortable to use as my Nikon. The electronic viewfinder is bright and large and with all the information I need to see there. The AF is super-fast and accurate and the built-in image stabilizer very effective. As already known from other OM-D cameras, the picture quality is on a very high level and in my opinion not behind a good APS-C camera. Especially at high ISO the sensor shows surprisingly little noise. A built-in WiFi combined with the Olympus App on your smartphone allows to control the camera remotely without any additional equipment and costs, this is really cool. HDR mode, Live-Bulb mode, a neat bracketing function, 8 fps , 3-inch touch screen and much more.

Together with the very slim 14- 42mm pancake Olympus offers a great and attractive kit and the 40-150mm is a compact completion too. I was in Venice and had it with me so photos will follow!

On The Border

Last Monday I made a short tour to the St. Antönier Joch at 2379m. It’s exactly on the border between Switzerland and Austria (in the mountains of Vorarlberg). Really easy to go and a great view. We started our tour at about 5:00 PM – like so many times – from the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe reservoir at 2037m. Afer crossed the frozen sea we went right to the Klostertal. Before we arrived at the alpine-hut the moon already comes up and illuminated the mountains like a spotlight. Because it was freezing cold (-30°C) and the alpine-hut was a self catering – there was cold too. Not that fine, so turn on the woodstove quickly!

After some warming up with tea at the stove we went out to take some night-shots.
The next day greeted us with sunshine and a beautiful view. Out into the nature!

Hi Folks!

Let’s start the blog with a story about a night-photography session in the mountains.

Until recently, I didn’t seriously concerned with night-photography. But now it was time to change this! Ok… now what I need for night photography? Correctly, night…and some knowledge about it – would help. Stars wouldn’t be bad either, the more the merrier. As little as possible stray light is requirement.

Where can I get all that? Good that everywhere around me are mountains! I thought immediately at the Silvretta Mountains. So far away from the artificial light as possible. A great place even by day. A road leading up to 2037 meters to the water reservoir. Huge thing!

Usually it’s more funny to take photos with some likeminded so I asked my photographers friends if they are in. Next evening we were on the road. After one and half-hour we reached the goal. The weather and sky were perfectly and the temperature tolerable. 15 minutes later, we found a good position and setup our cameras. After some time we got it better and better. Summarized: long exposure means a lot of fun and and patience but…it’s handy if you drink a beer, for example :) I’ll certainly repeat it!

Shot with Nikon D7000 and Sigma 10-20mm f/4.0-5.6

Take care!
